South Dublin County Council Arts Office has just initiated the consultation process for the next five year arts development strategy for the county. We're planning to carry out a number of focus group consultations that will feed ideas and themes into a seminar in September 2010.
The first of the focus groups will be with artists in RUA RED South Dublin Arts Centre in Tallaght on Friday 16th July from 10am to 2pm. Places can be booked directly through the arts centre Tel: 01-4515860.
It will be a broad based event focusing on future priorities and needs for artists interested in working in the area, independently of, in association with, or supported by South Dublin County Council. If you miss any of the focus groups you can still join in the discussions on this space.
The previous five year strategy (2006-2010) can be found on the arts website at http://arts.southdublin.ie but specifically in relation to supporting artists - this is what we said we would try to achieve five years ago:
• Provide opportunities for career development for artists of all artistic disciplines.
• Provide opportunities for artists to inform and develop their practice.
• Develop artist workspaces throughout the county.
• Support artist led programme development.
• Sustain local arts development by supporting local artists.
• Stimulate interaction across artistic disciplines, cultural background and professions.
Are these priorities still relevant today?
Orla Scannell, Arts Officer
Hi guys and gals.
ReplyDeleteJust to introduce myself. I am a Graphic Design instructor and have taught a few groups in the Tallaght Library - DigiArt and one Photo Manipulation class.
Has anyone seen the DigiArt exhibit for the first class in the library, it was a while ago though:-)
You can see the work on the S.D.C.C. website under Social Inclusion.
Was just wondering what's out there to teach? If you wanted to learn more about what I do just give me an E-Mail: jono.casey@gmail.com and I'll send you some samples. I do have commitments to the S.D.C.C. who come first in regards to work, they have supported me over this year and have a must be first priority in my view anyway:-)
Anyway get in touch and I'll see what I can do!
Regards
JCasey
Hi All,
ReplyDeleteComing up to the focus group on the county arts strategy on Friday these are some thoughts :
I would like to see a Cultural Plan for the county in place, following international best practice guidelines.
It would set out, for example, what each citizen's cultural entitlements are, would have a voluntary framework for corporate citizens to participate in the arts, would have a strategy of support for artists resident in the county, etc. Examples of cultural planning models adopted internationally by local government and by individual organisations can be seen on the website links below. I wonder if this is a possibility for South Dublin, it is what I would like to see happening

I am not sure if it is within the scope of the arts strategy to go for something like this?

Hi guys and gals.
ReplyDeleteSue I personally won't be free this Friday for the arts strategy but would like to know more about your Cultural Plan and what time frame you where looking at, namely when you wanted to start, how long you wanted it to run for and your targeted goals. I would be happy to lend assistance from the point of Graphic Design/Art Forms/Events Management, I have certs and experience in these, and I'm sure those in the region of S.D.County have the same, without disclosing names at this point. So, if you could expand on the info of what you had in mind I'm sure we could come up with something for the community:-)
Kind Regards

Hi All,
ReplyDeleteTo respond to JCasey message above :
Hi Jonathan,
If you have a look online at the following links you will see guidelines for the Cultural Planning model I have in mind.
http://www.artsyakka.com/resources/planning_and_policy/cultural_planning
www.dlg.nsw.gov.au/files/information/CPG-final.pdf
These are links to guidelines for Cultural Planning that local authorities (county councils) and various other government and corporate bodies have adopted in Australia, the UK, etc and are considered to be best practice internationally for arts and culture development by government agencies. Perhaps it was not clear in my first post that this is not something I would do as an individual artist. The reason I am suggesting it is that, as you are aware, in Ireland, the city and county councils are responsible for putting in place local arts development strategies which are appropriate to the needs and circumstances in each city or county, and they are funded by and work with the Arts Council to do this. So at this stage, I am asking a question as to whether it is within the scope of the local arts strategy in South Dublin to adopt this type of process and model? I would like to see that happening because it involves all levels of the society - individual artists, families, residents, businesses, etc in Arts and Culture planning and activities. And even if it is not within the scope of the local arts strategy for the next five years, I am saying I think these guidelines are very interesting and I suggest are something people involved in the consultation for the local arts strategy for the county might find interesting. Perhaps we can discuss it again online or during one of the consultation meetings. For the consultation process, I am thinking in broad terms and trying to put forward ideas and work on developing a shared vision and plan for the county as a whole and not on a specific proposal with a definite timeframe etc, I think it is important to begin with the concept, the vision, and then work out the goals and actions later.
Sue
Hi guys and gals.
ReplyDeleteSue
That looks like a good Cultural Plan. I now see the extent of your proposal. It's a good idea. As I said, I won't be there tomorrow, however I am looking into it in more detail now, and wish you my very best for the proposal you will be asking the county arts strategy:-)
It would be good practise to have it in place. And should be considered by the S.D.C.C. I was working closely with the Tallaght Youth Service up to recently, until family circumstances took over, but something like this would do that service a world of good. But not only that, you have T.C.U. you have organizations like C.H.E.S.S. and every aspect of society that can be involved. Try and get as many people on-board you have my support. And I'll try out my contacts over the next few weeks and months.
Kind Regards
JCasey
Thanks for your interest and support Jonathan, I am looking forward to interesting conversations about arts development over the next few weeks and months.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for your own work and ideas for Graphic Art, I will look at the work you mention soon, it sounds really interesting, I mainly work as a writer of fiction and non-fiction and am always amazed at how much can be communicated with a single image.....
Kind Regards,
Sue
